What Is a Power Flush and Does Your Central Heating System Need One?

But what exactly is a power flush, how does it work and how do you know whether your heating system needs one?
What Is a Power Flush?
A power flush is a professional cleaning process for a wet central heating system.
A specialist power flushing pump is connected to the heating circuit and water and cleaning chemicals are circulated around the system at a high flow rate. This helps loosen and remove sludge, rust, limescale and other debris that has accumulated inside the radiators and pipework.
Despite the name, power flushing isn't simply about forcing extremely high pressure through your heating system. The Surefix process uses high flow at controlled low pressure, helping to clean the system while protecting the existing pipework.

Why Does Sludge Build Up in Central Heating Systems?

The dirty water and suspended debris are then removed from the system.

Do I Need a Power Flush Before Having a New Boiler Installed?

Can Power Flushing Damage an Older Heating System?
Power flushing is designed to clean heating systems at a controlled pressure, but the condition of an older system needs to be considered.
If corrosion has already significantly weakened a radiator or pipework, removing compacted deposits can sometimes expose an existing weakness or leak. A power flush cannot reverse corrosion or deterioration that has already occurred.
That's another reason why the condition of the heating system should be assessed before work begins.
